There’s a phrase I keep seeing from “lifestyle photographers”: “no stiff poses.” And I get it. No one wants photos that feel forced. But I think posing has gotten a bad reputation.
Because posing isn’t about stiffness. It’s about direction.
Most people don’t walk into a session knowing what to do with their hands, where to look, or how to stand. They feel awkward, unsure, sometimes even self-conscious. That’s completely normal. Being in front of a camera can feel vulnerable.
That’s where I come in.
As a portrait photographer, one of my greatest strengths is reading the room. I can quickly tell who needs time to warm up, who feels nervous, and who just wants a little guidance.
And I give it.
Because gentle direction is what helps people relax. When you’re not left guessing, you can actually be present. A small shift, a simple prompt, a moment of connection. That’s where natural images come from.
I don’t believe in stiff posing. I believe in direction, intuition, and creating a space where you can feel comfortable being yourself. That’s when the best photos happen.
